Aqueous Corrosion in Renewable Fuel Processing Units (424)

No tool exist for predicting the corrosivity in the aqueous streams in renewable fuel processing units. The aqueous phase contains a combination of chemicals (CO, CO2, H2S, NH3 and HCl) which are all outside of the existing available models. The goal is to better understand the limits for corrosion resistant alloys under the aqueous conditions present in renewable fuel processing units

Atlas of Microstructures of Ni-Cr-Mo Alloys (414)

The objective of this project is to produce an atlas for alloys C-22, C-2000, 59 and 686 microstructures that clearly identifies the phases that occur in the alloy. The thermo-mechanical processing and welding that produced the microstructure will be properly documented with each case. The microstructural cases will be correlated with published or computer generated TTT data to explain the presence of each phase.

Extruder Alloys for Processing Recycled Materials (417)

This project is intended to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of unique alloys and hardfacings used in polymer extrusion equipment. A design of experiments to cover 3 chemical process environments involving alloys typically used in extruders. The primary benefit of completing this project is the creation of consistent corrosion data that can be used to make informed choices for polymer processing equipment materials for mildly corrosive polymer processing - improving equipment reliability and uptime.

Guideline for Preservation of New Equipment and Piping During Plant Construction ...

Develop a Guideline that covers the basic degradation mechanism that can damage equipment and piping during plant construction, pre-commissioning. List the mitigation and prevention steps, be aware that these have changed with module fabrication in low cost countries and ban on many corrosion inhibitors due to environmental concerns. The MTI guideline should become an “industry standard” that can be shared with non-materials/corrosion engineers to avoid MIC failures. It should describe cases and have concise MIC mitigation treatment plans/descriptions for these cases.

Measurement and Correlation of Wear Resistance (427)

There are numerous standard ASTM test methods for determining the relative resistance of materials or surface treatments to impingement, dry sliding wear, and wet reciprocating wear, however, there is no established correlation between a material’s mechanical properties and its wear resistance. The relationship between such wear tests and actual wear performance in equipment is unclear. The objective of this project is to develop approaches to predict wear rates for a range of materials frequently used in the process industries over a range of abrasion Indices and different types of wear.

Metal Additive Manufacturing Qualification for ASME BPVC (386)

Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides designers the ability to build parts directly from computer-aided design (CAD) files. Metal AM technology is rapidly maturing and offers a range of benefits to reduce cost, schedule and increase performance of Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) systems. The impact to the BPV industry has been limited by the availability of standards. The project objective is to use this effort to validate the qualification for materials used in fabrication of BVP equipment. This project will be authorized in two phases: Phase 1: Qualify an additive material manufacturing procedure using GMA-DED method and ER-2594 filler metal in accordance with the requirements of Section 6 in ASME Code Case (Record Number 22-1598) and ASME Section IX, Part QW, Article VI. Phase 2: Fabricate a test pressure vessel with the Phase 1 results and test it according to MTI provided design using GMA-DED in compliance with ASME Code Case (Record Number 22-1598) sections 1-14 requirements, and supplemental MTI requested test methods.

New Test Method for Titanium Hydriding (310)

This project will search for a firm that is able to non-destructively detect titanium hydriding in plant equipment. Past MTI titanium hydride projects looked at one specific method with the aim to adapt the method to identify titanium hydriding. This project has a much broader perspective aiming to test all techniques that have the potential to detect titanium hydriding. Industry information suggests that a method already exists. A few companies indicate they can non-destructively detect titanium hydriding. With the goal of discovering the best method to detect titanium hydriding, the project team intends to find out if these firms can prove their techniques.
